Meet Bhavana Madini

2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Third-Place Winner

I am Bhavana Madini — a student, speller, coach, research student, healthcare volunteer, dental assistant, and passionate educational enthusiast. My journey began with a love for words that carried me to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The countless late nights, early mornings, and hurried lunches taught me lessons far greater than spelling: resilience, discipline, and accountability. Losing no longer crushed me — instead, it reminded me why I loved the game.

When my time on stage ended, I stepped behind the scenes as a coach. I learned that teaching wasn't just about passing on knowledge, but about listening, adapting, and inspiring curiosity. These skills followed me beyond spelling, helping some of my students reach the national stage and guiding me as president of my school's Science Honor Society, where I led meetings, organized events, and encouraged peers to explore their own potential.

My passion for medicine and research led me into hospital volunteer work, shadowing doctors, and a part-time role as a dental assistant during high school. These experiences gave me a deeper understanding of patient care, teamwork, and the human side of healthcare — lessons no textbook could teach.

Education, to me, is a tool for empowerment. As Lead Coordinator and one of the sponsors for the MRA Foundation, I work to uplift underprivileged children determined to pursue learning, ensuring they receive the mentorship and resources they deserve.

Whether through language, science, healthcare, or mentorship, I strive to bridge knowledge and service. Every step I take is guided by one purpose — to learn deeply, serve fully, and make a meaningful difference.
